CHICAGO (AP) — Metra says it will allow small pets on all weekend trains between downtown Chicago and its suburbs after a successful trial run.
The commuter rail agency's board of directors voted Wednesday to make the program permanent.
Only small pets in enclosed protective carriers are allowed. Carriers must fit on a rider's lap or under a seat. Owners are responsible for their animals and Metra has the right to remove disruptive passengers and pets.
Metra says 60 riders traveled with pets during the test phase over the past few months.
It says many of those providing online feedback said the program would encourage them to ride weekend trains more often.
